Quebec Funicular links Dufferin Terrace, le quartier Petit- Champlain, la Place Royale et le vieux- port. This is the only Funicular of this type in Canada.
On April 1879, work began under the direction of the owner, William Griffith. The Funicular ran during the summer only because the two cars were in open air without protection from rain or snow. Power was supplied by steam machine.
In 1907 a complete reorganization of the Company and the Funicular took place. The new Company bought the Louis- Jolliet House. The Company changed the steam system for an electrical one and covered the Funicular. Mr. Alexander Cummings obtained the right to pierce an opening in the floor of Dufferin Terrace. In 1997, the Funicular was rebuilt.
